The Smile of the Child: Medical and Psychosocial Intervention to refugee and migrant children
Supporting children with serious health problems is one of the standard and key actions provided by “The Smile of the Child” on a longstanding basis 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, free of charge across the country.
With the support of the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), “The Smile of the Child” contributes to the immediate support of infants and children with increased medical needs accommodated in apartments in Athens and Thessaloniki (e.g. provides paediatric home treatment, medical and nursing care, physiotherapy, psychosocial support and assistance in medical consultations).
86 individual children have been supported from April to August 2018 by the specialized team of social workers, psychologists, pediatricians, nurses and physiotherapists of the Organization, with the support of interpreters, in the framework of a total number of 1.568 curative sessions.
Among other activities, the specific action covers the needs of children who are facing health problems, limited mobility, developmental problems, chronic diseases or are recovering from serious injury.
The project “Direct and Holistic Medical and Psychosocial Intervention for Refugee and Migrant Children in Danger in Greece” is implemented in close and continuous cooperation with the authorities and the organizations that have the oversight of the beneficiaries, organizations that are responsible for the accommodation needs of the families, and children’s hospitals that have the medical overview of the families and children.
