FSC attends the UN High Level Political Forum on SDGS
FSC certification’s contribution to achieving SDGs
UN HLPF discussions to include five SDGs directly linked to FSC’s work
From 9 to 18 July the annual meeting of the United Nation’s High Level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place at the UN headquarters in New York City.
This event gathers global key players involved in the realization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the aim to review progress on their implementation.
FSC certification, standards and practices contribute in the first place to achieving target 15.2 of Goal 15 (Life on Land). This target aims “By 2020, to promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.”
But FSC’s contribution does not stop at Goal 15. The broader environmental, social, and economic focus of the FSC forest stewardship principles contribute to 35 targets of 11 SDGs that focus on issues such as poverty, equality, natural resources, decent work or climate change as explained here.
On the agenda
The UN HLPF discussions will include five SDGs that are directly linked to FSC’s work:
SDG 15 (Life on Land)
SDG 12 (Consumption and Production)
SDG 17 (Partnerships)
SDG 6 (Water)
SDG 7 (Energy)
Several countries will be presenting their Voluntary National Reviews on their progress with implementation of the SDGs where it is expected that FSC and forest certification will be included as part of their work.
